Duane Jailed for Statutory Rape of 13-Year-Old

A Connelly Springs man is in jail after investigators with the Burke County Sheriff's Office charged him Tuesday with the statutory rape of a teenager.

Jerry Dale Duane (right), 35, of 5775 Hubert Lane, was also charged with taking indecent liberties with the victim, a 13-year old female. The two sex charges stem from an alleged two month relationship between Duane and the girl, occurring June through July of this year.

An interview with the girl was conducted at the Child Advocacy Center in Morganton, a detective said. During this interview, it was revealed that Duane became friends with the child's family after they moved to the area from Florida, according to the investigator.

The friendship escalated to a sexual relationship between Duane and the girl shortly afterwards, the detective alleges.

Duane was jailed under a $25,000 secured bond and had a first court appearance this morning.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is also involved with the investigation.
