Jenkins Arrested for Stealing High Dollar Metal

Burke County Sheriff's Office investigators arrested an employee of Emery Corporation on Friday, alleging the man was involved in stealing high dollar metal from the company.

Steven Allen Jenkins, 46, of 4559 Scott Road in Morganton was charged with felonious larceny by employee after detectives recovered a portion of the stolen property from a metal recycling business in Hickory, according to Det. John Huffman.

Emery officials said that approximately $256,322.85 worth of metal had been stolen from the corporation, with the thefts occurring as far back as October of 2004. The expensive metal is largely used in nuclear reactors, and is also sold to NASA, Huffman said.

Emery is located at 1523 North Green Street in Morganton.

Huffman stated he received information last week showing the metal was possibly being stolen by an employee, and Jenkins was developed as a suspect.

Other charges are pending and other "persons of interest" are being interviewed, the detective said.

Jenkins was placed under a $25,000 secured bond and will have a first court appearance today.
