Detectives Catch Man in Stolen Truck After Chase

Sheriff's investigators doing surveillance in the Dysartsville section of Burke County found themselves in a chase with a box truck Tuesday morning.

The truck was later found to be stolen from Icard, and the driver was arrested a short time after running into the woods.

Detectives John Huffman and Chad Biddix reportedly were on Gold Mine Road around 11:30 AM when they spotted the white box truck pulling out from a residence in a reckless manner.

The detectives activated their blue lights and siren, but the truck would not pull over, a report stated. The chase entered into McDowell County, and ended a short time later when the truck went down a private drive and into a field. The driver ran into the woods, according to the detectives.

Officers with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina State Highway Patrol, along with Department of Corrections K-9 units, assisted the Burke detectives with a search of the area.

The driver was located in the woods a short time later.

He was identified as Robert Camara Harris (right), 30, of 7322 Advent Road, Morganton.

Harris has a lengthy arrest record which includes breaking and entering, larceny, possessing stolen property, drug-related charges, and assault on a female, according to the computerized records system of the Burke County Sheriff's Office.

Harris reportedly confessed to stealing the truck the
previous night from a residence on Owens Mountain Rd. in Icard.

Harris was charged with felonious larceny of a motor vehicle, felonious possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony speeding to elude arrest.

He was jailed under a $10,000 secured bond and will have a first court appearance today.
