Sheriff Captures Robbery Suspect

On September 22, 2006 at 7:45 p.m. the Burke County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported armed robbery at Cloer's Convenience Store on Highway 181 in Morganton.

The clerk reported that a black male displayed a large knife and demanded money from the cash register. According to a press release, the woman said she opened the cash register and the black male leaned over the counter, still holding the knife, and took approximately $300.00 from the register.

The clerk reportedly told deputies that a black male approximately 5'7" tall, wearing dark colored, baggy clothing, and a toboggan, with long curly black highlighted hair underneath the toboggan, walked up to the counter at the store after all the customers had left. After taking the money, the male ran out the front door on foot, headed toward Oak Hill Grill.

Burke County Sheriff's Office K-9, Del, and Lieutenant Don Barber tracked the suspect from the store and located a wig believed to have been worn by the suspect during the robbery, said Detective Lieutenant Becky Brendle of the Sheriff's Office.

Brendle said that during the course of the investigation, information was obtained about a possible suspect and vehicle. Sheriff John T. McDevitt located the suspect vehicle at the intersection of Highway 181 and Hill Top Drive, Brendle stated, and three individuals fled from the vehicle on foot.

Sheriff McDevitt reportedly chased one of the suspects into a wooded area. The suspect, later identified as Bryant Kelly Burgess, 22, of 2829 Pearson Lane, Morganton, was caught by Sheriff McDevitt and taken into custody.

As reported by Lieutenant Brendle, drug paraphernalia and a quantity of cocaine were taken from Burgess.

The other two subjects were later located but have not been charged, according to investigators.

Brendle stated that Burgess was identified by the clerk as the person that allegedly robbed the store.

Investigators with the Sheriff's Office also learned that the Morganton Department of Public Safety held a warrant charging Burgess with a reported armed robbery of the Colonel's Pantry in Morganton on September 20th.

Burgess (left), was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. Bond was set at $60,000.00 secured, and he has first appearance court set for September 25th.
