McDevitt Elected President of Local LEO Association

The Blue Ridge Law Enforcement Association elected Burke County Sheriff John T. McDevitt as their president at a recent quarterly meeting held on September 21st.

The BRLEA is comprised of area police chiefs, sheriffs, supervisors with the State Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation, chiefs with Alcohol Beverage Control and Alcohol Law Enforcement, and the N.C. State Highway Patrol captain assigned to Troop F.

The organization is primarily based in North Carolina Planning Region E, which encompasses Burke, Catawba, Caldwell, and Alexander County. Currently, the organization is twenty-eight members strong.

According to the BRLEA's by-laws, the association's objective is to improve the overall criminal justice system within Region E, and to work toward the overall improvement of law enforcement in the State of North Carolina.

The organization meets quarterly, McDevitt stated, to discuss a gamut of topics which include new laws and proposed legislation, management issues, grant availability, and prosecution concerns.

McDevitt said his main goal as president will be the same as one of the BRLEA's mission statements, which is to promote cooperation and communication among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

"Interagency cooperation and mutual respect is something I work toward daily as Burke County Sheriff," McDevitt said. "I am honored that my colleagues in law enforcement were confident enough in my abilities to elect me as their president."

McDevitt will replace Lenoir Police Chief Joey Reynolds as president. His term will last through 2007.
