Church |
| |
 |
On November 14, 2006,
according to investigators with the Burke County Sheriff's Office, two
white males allegedly took a guitar from the Evangelical Methodist Church
located in Rutherford College. William Randell Cannon, 39, (left), and
Jerry Lee Martin, 38, (below), supposedly took the guitar from the
church and pawned it in Lenoir. |
| |
| On November 14, 2006 at approximately 12:00 pm, William Randell
Cannon entered the Evangelical Methodist Church, located in Rutherford College.
Cannon spoke to the pastor and requested four dollars for gas to drive to
Hickory for a job interview, according to investigators with the Sheriff's
Office. While Cannon was speaking with the pastor, Jerry Lee Martin was
allegedly removing an electric guitar from the sanctuary. |

|
| The Burke County
Sheriff's Office was contacted and an incident report was filed. At
approximately 3:45 pm on November 15, 2006, investigators with the Sheriff's
Office recognized a white Geo Storm occupied by two white males fitting the
description of the suspects given by witnesses at the church. The vehicle was
headed toward Caldwell County on Connelly Springs Road and investigators
followed and located the vehicle at Baton Tire and Auto. |
| |
| Investigators said they
confronted Cannon outside the business and he advised them the vehicle belonged
to him. Investigators then attempted to locate Jerry Lee Martin inside the
business. Employees told investigators that Martin had left out the back door.
Martin was not located in the area. Cannon provided investigators with
information where the stolen guitar could be located. He was taken into custody
at the scene by Caldwell County on unrelated charges. |
| |
| On November 16, 2006
investigators recovered the stolen guitar at a pawn shop in Lenoir, where it
was pawned by Jerry Lee Martin. The guitar was then returned to the Evangelical
Methodist Church. |
| |
| Warrants have been
issued for both Jerry Lee Martin and William Randell Cannon for felony larceny
and felony possession of stolen goods. |
