Woman Arrested for Attempted Bank Robbery

On April 9, 2007, at approximately 12:25 pm, the Burke County Sheriff's Office received a call from BB&T Bank on South Center Street in Hildebran advising that a female subject had just entered the bank, produced a handgun and demanded money. Deputies and detectives immediately responded to the bank and secured the scene.

Connie Jean Morton, 40, right, of 908 7th Avenue SW, Conover, was arrested in the evening of April 9, 2007 for attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Upon arrival at the scene, witnesses gave a detailed description of the female suspect as well as the suspect's vehicle. Witnesses stated the suspect left in an older model Ford Explorer with discoloration to the driver's side front quarter panel. They were also able to give registration plate information.

At the time of the attempted robbery, Morton was wearing dark sunglasses, a blue pullover type raincoat, with the hood over her head, and pink gloves. Morton allegedly showed the clerk a handgun, handed the clerk a yellow bag and demanded the money. Morton was unable to obtain any money from the bank. She left the area in the vehicle described above traveling towards I-40.

From this information, and security footage from the bank, detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office were able to identify the suspect as Connie Jean Morton. She was entered as wanted, and surrounding agencies were notified. Multiple locations were checked before locating Morton with the help of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Morton was arrested and the clothing and weapon from the attempted robbery were recovered.

Connie Jean Morton is charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and is being held at the Burke Catawba Detention Facility. She was placed under a $75,000.00 secured bond and first court appearance is April 11, 2007.
