Lincolnton Man Arrested for Breaking and Entering

On May 16, 2007, at approximately 8:30 am, the Burke County Sheriff's Office received a report of a breaking and entering in progress at a Clay residence on George Hildebran School Road.

Matthew Douglas Saunders, 28, right, of 2481 Lake Street, Lincolnton, NC has been charged with felony breaking and entering and larceny and felony possession of stolen property.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with Ms. Clay, who reported that she witnessed an unknown white male break into her vehicle in the driveway of her home. She witnessed the suspect take her wallet from her vehicle. When she went to confront the suspect, he ran into the woods. Ms. Clay provided deputies with a detailed description of the suspect, and deputies began a search of the area.
 
Around 9:00 am, the Burke County Sheriff's Office received a second report from a Mr. Page in reference to a breaking and entering to his residence on Peaceful Pines Road, off George Hildebran School Road. Mr. Page's residence is within a quarter mile of the Clay residence. Mr. Page reported that a white male, matching the description of the suspect from Ms. Clay's residence, entered his home and took several guns and other property.
 
At approximately 9:20 am, detectives and deputies with the Sheriff's Office located Matthew Douglas Saunders, of Lincolnton, at an address on Country Valley Road off George Hildebran School Road. Mr. Saunders matched the description given by both victims.
 
All the reported stolen property from both victims was recovered from the suspect at the residence on Country Valley Road, where he was staying. This residence is within one half mile of both victim's residences.
 
Mr. Saunders was arrested for felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, and felony possession of stolen property. He was placed in the Burke County Jail under a $30,000.00 secured bond. First court appearance is set for Friday, May 18, 2007.
