| Public Notice of Edward Byrne
"JAG" Grant |
| |
| The Burke County
Sheriff's office was recently notified that they are eligible to receive
$12,504 in funding, through the federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice
Assistance (JAG) Grant Program. |
| |
| The Sheriff's Office
proposes to use the grant to purchase approximately twelve to thirteen tasers.
This will allow officers to have a secondary option to deploy a non-lethal
device when dealing with violent offenders. The Sheriff's Office already
utilizes a limited amount of tasers, but eventually hopes to equip every
full-time officer with the device. |
| |
| Historically, this grant
has been awarded to the Sheriff's Office once every two or three years to
purchase equipment and a match is not required by the county. |
| |
| The JAG grant replaced
the "Local Law Enforcement Block Grant" (LLEBG), which usually provided
substantial more funding on a yearly basis; however, a 1/9 match was required
by the county. |
