Arrests Made in Local Church Breaking and Entering

On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, around 6:30 pm, the Burke County Sheriff's Office received a call from a concerned citizen about suspicious activity around the McElrath Chapel AME Church on Jamestown Road.
 
The caller advised there was a suspicious vehicle at the church, reportedly being operated by two white males. The caller also heard loud noises coming from behind the church.
 
When deputies arrived, they discovered that all four air conditioning units at the back of the church had been vandalized, and a compressor was missing from one of the four units.
 
Deputies obtained a description of the suspicious vehicle and a general description of the vehicle's occupants.
 
On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, around 7:35 pm, deputies with the Burke County Sheriff's Office, along with assistance from the Glen Alpine Police Department, observed a vehicle that fit the description of the suspect vehicle on Jamestown Road. The vehicle drove past the church and turned around in a nearby driveway.
 
The officers stopped the vehicle and identified Samuel Thomas Evans and Andrew Clate Evans as driver and passenger of the vehicle. Both fit the general description of the suspects.
 
The investigation was then turned over the detectives with the Sheriff's Office. Upon further investigation, both Samuel and Andrew Evans were charged with one count of felony larceny and three counts of misdemeanor injury to personal property.
 
Both were placed in the Burke County Jail under $20,000 secured bond. Their first appearance is set for September 28, 2007. Both made bond that same day.
 
On September 27, 2007, detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division conducted a search of the impounded vehicle seized from the Evans brothers.
 
Upon searching the vehicle, detectives discovered tools that were believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes above. Detectives obtained warrants for the arrest of Samuel and Andrew Evans for felony possession of burglary tools.
 
Both were arrested and they provided detectives with confessions to numerous heat pump and air conditioning unit larcenies in western Burke County. The locations of theft included residences and churches. The brothers were placed in the Burke County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
