Two Arrested in Counterfeit Check Case

On January 29, 2008, Daniel James Eisenhour, 28, and Ia Vang, 23, both of Hill Drive in Valdese, were arrested and charged with obtaining property by false pretense. The two had been producing and passing numerous counterfeit checks in Burke, Catawba, and Caldwell counties. 
 
On December 29, 2009, the Valdese Police Department took a report from Childer's Market in Valdese of a counterfeit check, which was passed by an unknown white male.
 
On January 25, 2008, the Burke County Sheriff's office took a report from East West Convenience Store on Hwy 70 near Valdese for a counterfeit check passed by an unknown white male.
 
Investigators from the Valdese Police Department and the Burke County Sheriff's Office determined that the checks were produced by the same maker, and they were probably passed by the same subjects. Investigators learned that neighboring jurisdictions had taken reports of the passing of similar counterfeit checks.
 
Surveillance video was obtained by investigators from East West Convenience Store, which lead to the identification of the two suspects, Daniel James Eisenhour and Ia Vang. Detectives also learned that Ia Vang was wanted by the NC Department of Corrections for a probation violation from Catawba County, and she was also wanted by the US Marshal's Service for a federal probation violation. Ia Vang has been wanted since May of 2007.
 
On Tuesday, January 29, 2008, investigators with the Valdese Police Department and the Burke County Sheriff's Office located Daniel Eisenhour and Ia Vang at 2338 Hill Dr. Apt. 36D, Valdese, NC. Both were placed under arrest without incident.
 
A search of Daniel Eisenhour produced numerous counterfeit checks, which had not been passed. During subsequent interviews, Ia Vang confessed to producing counterfeit checks and assisting Daniel Eisenhour with passing the checks at numerous businesses in Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties. Daniel Eisenhour also confessed to passing the checks with Ia Vang.
 
Daniel James Eisenhour was charged by the Valdese Police Department with two felony counts of obtain property by false pretense, and he was placed in the Burke County Jail under a $20,000.00 secured bond. First court appearance is set for January 30, 2008.
 
Ia Vang was charged by the Burke County Sheriff's Office with one felony count of obtain property by false pretense. She was placed in the Burke Catawba Detention Facility under a $10,000.00 secured bond. First court appearance is set for January 30, 2008. Vang was also served with a felony probation warrant from Catawba County. The US Marshals Service placed a detainer on Ms. Vang pending the disposition of local charges. Additional charges are pending against both Daniel Eisenhour and Ia Vang.
