| On Saturday,
November 8, 2008, an undercover operation was conducted at several locations in
Burke County, resulting in two arrests. |
| |
| Hong Thi
Nguyen of 1949 S. Ridge Dr. Belmont, NC, and Victoria Leigh Underwood of 112
Glendale St. Lenoir, NC were arrested and charged with possession with intent
to sell and deliver counterfeit merchandise and possession with intent to sell
and deliver counterfeit CD-R's. |
| |
| The operation
consisted of agents with the Secretary of State's Anti-Counterfeit Task Force
and the Burke County Narcotics Task Force. |
| |
| Agents went
into several businesses and located various counterfeit items, including cd's,
watches, jewelry, movies, and handbags. |
| |
| The
interagency cooperation we see in these cases, including the invaluable
assistance of the District Attorney's Office, is a perfect example of
government leveraging resources in these challenging economic times to protect
the state's consumers from harmful, shoddy goods, and to protect the jobs of
people working for the state's legitimate manufactures and merchants. |
| |
| Sheriff John
T. McDevitt says that the working relationship with the Secretary of State's
Office has been vital in the arrest and prosecution of these type crimes, and
pledges that his office will continue to crack down on counterfeit retail
product sales. |
| |
| All the
counterfeit items that were seized had a combined retail value of approximately
$80,000.00. |
| |
| A secured
bond of $1,000.00 was set for both females arrested in this case. First court
appearance is set for November 17, 2008. |
