Connelly Springs Man Shot in Abdomen

 

Bryan Curtis Whitener, 24, of 1760 33rd Street Drive SW, Hickory, NC has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

On February 13, 2009, at approximately 11:40 pm, the Burke County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call in reference to a fight in progress with shots fired at 1797 Hwy 70 East in Connelly Springs.
Upon arrival, deputies located the home owner, Richard Elwood Bowen, injured from an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. 
 
It was learned by deputies that Mr. Bowen was hosting a party with a few friends when the suspect, Bryan Curtis Whitener, arrived uninvited and unannounced. Once Mr. Whitener arrived, he was asked to leave by Mr. Bowen.
 
Shortly after being asked to leave, a conflict took place between the two men. According to witnesses, Mr. Whitener displayed a handgun and began firing rounds in a reckless manner. Mr. Bowen was struck in the right abdomen during the incident.
 
Mr. Bowen was transported to Valdese Hospital where he was treated and released for injuries received from a grazing gunshot wound.
 
Burke County Sheriff's Office investigators arrived on the scene and conducted further investigation into the incident.
 
A warrant was issued for Mr. Bryan Curtis Whitener for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is not in custody and is currently being sought in connection to the case. His last known address is 1760 33rd Street Drive SW, Hickory, NC.
