Sheriff's Deputy Charged and Terminated

On February 17, 2009, Cecil "Juan" Bristol, right, was terminated from the Burke County Sheriff's Office and a criminal summons charging him with filing a false police report was served on him by Sheriff McDevitt.

Bristol reported to the Burke County Sheriff's Office, on February 14, 2009, that his Sig Sauer 40 caliber semi-automatic service weapon, belonging to Burke County, had been stolen from his mother's residence on Mark Bristol Road in Burke County.

An investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Burke County Sheriff's Office revealed that the weapon was not stolen from his mother's residence on February 13, 2009.

It was also found during the investigation that the circumstances surrounding the gun's disappearance had been fabricated by Bristol. The firearm has not been recovered as of this news release, and the investigation into the theft continues.

Bristol had been employed by the Burke County Sheriff's Office since November 18, 1996.

His court date on the filing a false police report is scheduled for March 4, 2009.

Sheriff McDevitt commented that as law enforcement officers we take an oath based on trust, honor, integrity, and truthfulness. We hold our officers to that standard and in this case that standard has been broken.
