*** Update *** Shooting in Icard

Christopher Blaine Hedrick, 30, of 2596 Ironwood Drive, Hickory, NC has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

This charge stems from a shooting that occurred over the weekend.
On Friday, December 9, 2011, at approximately 11:58 pm, the Burke County Sheriff's Office responded to 2864 Doc Pugh Road, Icard, NC in reference to a victim with a gunshot wound.
Deputies arrived at the residence and located the victim, Edward Leroy Lail, inside his residence, with an apparent gunshot wound to his chest area.
Lail told deputies that an unknown white male entered his residence unannounced and began arguing with him. Mr. Lail asked the subject to leave his residence and then retrieved a pistol from his bedroom.
The subject walked out of the residence and Mr. Lail followed him onto the attached carport. Once outside the residence, Mr. Lail noticed another unknown male subject in a vehicle in his driveway.
According to Mr. Lail, he fired a warning shot to scare the subjects off his property. Mr. Lail then turned to go back into his residence and was shot by one of the male subjects.
The unknown males fled the scene and Mr. Lail was able to dial 911 for assistance.
After Mr. Lail was air-lifted to CMC Hospital in Charlotte, the scene was secured by deputies. Detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office were contacted in reference to the shooting.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence and while obtaining the search warrant, detectives developed two suspects that may have been involved in the incident; Christopher Blaine Hedrick and David Randall Heien.
After speaking with the suspects, detectives learned that one of the suspects is a reserve officer with the Valdese Police Department. The reserve Valdese Police officer, David Randall Heien, admitted to detectives it was his duty weapon, a .45 caliber Sig Sauer pistol, which was used in the shooting.
Although the officer admitted to being present during the shooting, detectives believe the Valdese Officer was not the subject who fired the shot.
A warrant was issued for Christopher Blaine Hedrick and he was arrested Saturday, December 10, 2011. Hedrick's bond was set at $40,000.00 secured. Hedrick was released on bond Saturday and was interviewed by detectives with the Burke County Sheriff's Office.
Hedrick admitted to shooting Mr. Lail; however, he told detectives he was protecting himself. It is still unknown how Hedrick obtained the weapon.
Heien has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation has been completed by the Burke County Sheriff's Office.
The Burke County Sheriff's Office is working closely with the District Attorney's Office in reference to further charges, pending the completion of the investigation.
Mr. Lail was admitted to the Charlotte Medical Center early Saturday morning and was released on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Mr. Lail was treated for a gunshot wound to his chest, under his right arm.
